History of the United States from the Discovery of the Continent - by George Bancroft. Complete six volume set. Thoroughly revised edition with illustrations. Pub: Little, Brown and Company Ã,Â- Boston 1879. Centenary Edition. This is a fabulous 6 volume set! There is such a wealth of information here that I donÃ,Â't know where to begin! I guess the contents would be the best starting point. Each volume has a contents which lists in detail what is in every chapter within that volume. Volume I has a list of illustrations for all six volumes and volume six has a very user friendly index for the whole set. Each volume has a tissue guarded portrait frontispiece which consists of: Capt. John Smith; William Penn; Benjamin Franklin; Samuel Adams; John Hancock; and George Washington. There are several steel and wood illustrations throughout the entire set ranging from Cotton Mather and Daniel Boone to the Massacre of Settlers and the Pursuit of Paul Revere. The binding on these volumes is quarter Moroccan leather in a rich butterscotch brown with a nicely contrasting maroon and butterscotch marbleized paper over board. The spine is simple yet sophisticated and elegant with gold gilt lettering. Each volume is 12mo Duodecimo (7 Ã,3⁄4Ã,Â" tall) and they have approx 558 pp. Each volume also has top edge gilt.
