Interesting and very old knife Measures 12 7/8" long with 7 3/4" X 1 3/8" blade. The double-edged blade has been cleaned and sharpened, it apparently had quite a bit of oxidation/rusting on it at one time . On the blade is marked with individual letter stamps "CPL. JOHN R. GREENE / U.S. CAVALRY" . These letters are stuck pretty deep and down inside the strikings you can see the rust from the original "finish" which was cleaned off. The handle is made of five heavy solid wood rings or washers, perhaps ebony. These are very slightly loose. The pommel and guard are solid brass and heavy. The knife is quite heavy, weighs one pound by itself, t is no sheath. T is no story with this knife. I did some internet research for the Cpl. named Couldn't come up with any John Greene with that spelling. I was told by one person I consider knowledgeable that the spelling of Greene could very well be that of a Buffalo Soldier in the U.S. Cavalry. T are several cavalrymen by the name of John Green listed with various Cavalry regiments on the internet rosters available, which are by no means extensive or complete, and one or two with the name Greene, but not a John.
