FRENCH ENAMEL SNUFF BOX c 1890 Made in France by SAMSON, copying the English enamel factories in about 1890, this pretty little enamel box would have been used to hold snuff. It is actually very tactile and the little heel provided a useful handle while you flick open the lid and inhale your snuff. It is decorated in rose pink with embossed cartouches containing pretty painted flowers. The stumpy heel has the same flowery decoration and there are little white dotted embossed decorations all over. The lid is attached with a gilt metal mount and the interior is plain white enamel. There is unfortunately some damage, which you can see in the photo: the heel base enamel has been chipped round the edge and there is a 2 cm chip to the enamel on the sole of the shoe. There is also a miniscule chip to the toe and there is a tiny rough area where the clasp is. Dimensions: height 5 cm (2 inches); length 9 cm (3 1/2 inches) Apart from that, it is a sweet little object which would make a good additon to anyone's collection!
