UNUSUAL ANTIQUE CAUCASIAN SHIRVAN SMALL RUG with PEREPEDIL DEISGN, southern part of the Shirvan rug weaving district, central eastern Caucasus Mountains, late 19th century to circa 1900, and coming in very good overall condition for the collector. The exact size is: 2'-8" x 3'-9" (81 x 114 cm). It is unusaul to find an antique Shirvan rug displaying a Perepedil Kuba field design. This example has natural ivory wool warps and natural ivory cottom wefts. All of the colors are natural and derived from plant sources with the black dye lot being oxidized. The ground color of the field is abrashed from indigo blue at the top and the bottom to a blue-green hue in the center. The overall pile condition is quite good with just a few scattered moth bites. There are some areas of oxidation to the black dye lot in the outermost pin border along both sides and note that all four corners all have slight gouges (see photos #5, 6, 7, and 8). The top end shows slight reduction and needs to be sewn secure. The bottom shows the original warp loop endings, an indicator of the rug being woven in the southern Shirvan district.
