Rare and exquisite antique Chinese Ch'ing dynasty silver pendant. The silver disk is masterfully hand engaged with five bats representing the five blessings in life: health, long life, prosperity, love of virtue and a tranquil peaceful natural death. Set over the disc is a green dyed walrus tusk Pi - which represents the bridge connected to heaven. Man could speak to the gods thru the hole in the stone. the Pi disk represents the intelligence of ancient China and conveys blessings of wisdom to the wearer. The small white mutton fat nephrite jade carving depicts two figures and a tree. Suspended from he pendant are 5 genuine natural coral beads and 1 turquoise bead. 3 1/4" long and 2" in diameter.In the 1800s only the emperor was allowed to wear green jade. The nobility, in order to enjoy the deep rick green of jade. wore beads and carvings made of dyed green walrus tusk. The recipe for this beautiful green dye has been lost. Objects made of this dyed walrus tusk are very rare and highly collected.
