39 inches long22 inches wide19 inches tall54 poundsLate 19th century, Chinese export, wood carved, carving casket/chest. Deeply carved, outstanding condition, rare, original brass hardware. Scenes on all four sides and top. If you can, take a moment and zoom in on the items and really look at the carvings. There is so much detail and the story on each side has its own unique point of view from the war going on around and above them. The chest is full of powerful human expression and action. From being a brave war leader still fighting in the air as he is knocked from his horse, to a woman in the mountain city below begging two rich woman for food as they laugh at her and turn to go back to their spectacular city, to even an old couple going through the last of there rice rations to give out to the fighting soldiers, scared but willing to starve for the younger men like noble hearted peasants with pure souls.This chest is by far the most spectacular I have ever seen, and when it is in front of you, for themany years to come, like myself, you will still discover new faces within, with there own storiescentered around this masterpiece that ties a time long ago into a great story of its own, with only five carvings.
