This is a very rare antique French paperweight with a sulfide portrait of George Washington. Some reference books have listed this as being made by Baccarat, but I believe it was actually made by Clichy around 1850. When I purchased there was a very old hand written inked label on the bottom that read "Washington Baccarat". The sulfide is gorgeous, and when you look at it in different lights the details and shadows almost glow. The sulfide is on a clear blue ground which is sandwiched between an opaque white. You can see this from the side view. The paperweight measures 73.6mm (about 2 7/8") in diameter, and 41.8mm tall (about 1 5/8"). There is a small concave bottom with a ring around it. I believe this has been restored (polished) at some point in its life. There are no scratches or chips to the surface. There is a small fissure (internal crack) line seen on one side in the blue ground above and below the white center. I cannot feel anything with my fingernail from the outside. This is a gorgeous antique paperweight. You will be very pleased. It is much nicer in person! Please note: See last photo, I will be listing another antique French paperweight with a sulfide of Napoleon III and millefiori garland in a separate auction. These both came from the same estate. Please take a look at both!
