This is a Confederate Texas horse bit. Still quite solid. This is a dug up relic. It was discovered (on private land) by Dee Breckheiser sometime within the past 20 years. Dee Breckheiser died about a year ago from Lou Gehrig's disease. For 40 years Dee was an avid metal detecting enthusiast, historian and archeologist. I saw him shortly before he died and saw his huge collection of artifacts he had uncovered in New Mexico and northern Texas. I have acquired many pieces from his collection. About 15 years ago Dee retraced the retreat of the Confederate Texas Army after the Glorieta Pass Civil War battle. He metal detected in the Confederates camp sites mostly along the Rio Grand (map is pictured showing the retreat of the Confederates). ABOUT the Glorieta Pass battle - This was the farthest west major battle of the Civil War - The Glorieta Pass fight too place on March 26-28, 1862. Glorieta Pass was a strategic location, situated 13 miles east of Santa Fe, and on the Santa Fe Trail. A Confederate force of 200-300 Texans encamped at one end of the pass. Union Maj. John M. Chivington led more than 400 Union soldiers to the pass and on the morning of March 26 moved out to attack.
