This auction is for one of the classic early finger lamps. It was made by the Boston & Sandwich Glass company and uses one of the patents of Hiram Dillaway who was Sandwich's director of the mold department (Thuro OLI 1 / pg 115). The patent is included in the photos and the lamp is embossed with its date "PAT JULY 18 1871." The patent was for a lamp mold that created a drip catch rim around the top of the font. This was done by pressing the glass into the mold from the bottom of the font, then finishing off the bottom by hand, hence the unique closure swirl you see in the base of all lamps made with this process. The thumb hold on the handle, although not actually patented, is also a signature of all of these Dillaway finger lamps. They were made in several sizes. This one is in a very desirable small size. It stands 3-1/4" tall and 3-3/8" in diameter. The lamp has a No. 1 Taplin-Brown collar (with one tiny 1/16" crack on the edge of the brass), and is otherwise in as perfect a condition as I've ever come across. Don't miss out on this one. Please ask questions if you have any. I try to be fully open in all of my auctions because I want us both to be happy with the results.
