Doll belonging to Mrs. Dewey (Caroline) Howell of Findlay, Ohio, (born in 1890's) from her girlhood. Origin is unknown, but Mrs. Howell stated that a traveling salesman brought it to her house. He took a cutting of Caroline's mother's hair for the wig. Head and arms are bisque. Eyes open and close. Alas! Her left hand has been broken. (see photo), but that is the only injury. Her body is covered with muslin. Knees bend due to cloth joint. Her clothing includes a sateen lace-trimmed dress, lace-trimmed petticoat and pantaloons, as well as knit leggings. Mrs. Howell gave it to me in the 1970's, just before she died, as a token of deep friendship since she had no children. The clothing has never been removed. The doll comes from smoke-free environment.
