This unique, early picnic basket-for-two is awonderful piece of original American folk art! It’s obvious that it was completely handmade: it’s quirky, tall shape; the embellished carrying handle; the way its constructed with unusually narrow–cut split oak pieces woven around its structure of wider, flat oak planks. Even the brass hinges have been individually cut and don’t match exactly. The piece is sturdy and in good condition. There are just a few small breaks here and there in the narrower split oak strips (see close-up photos) and when you close both lids at the same time, one side doesn’t close as tightly as the other; this seems to be inherent in the original construction. The basket stands 16 ½” high by 8 ¼” wide by 10 ¼” in length. The single handle is 6” high.
