Intricately decorated with raised designs and engraved details to the brass lid and base. The body of this box is a continuous piece of copper with light denting and a lovely patina with a purple hue. Both sides are bordered in very fine brass beading. Among the decorative features are references to biblical passages and names in the Dutch (or German) language. The center of each panel features scenes of miraculous celestial apparitions beheld by adoring mortals. To the lid are four scenes attributed to Matthew, Marcus, Lucas and Johannes. To the very top and bottom are scenes of Christus. The reverse side, or base, is slightly more worn than the lid. The 4 minor scenes are of Adam, Moses, Simson and Goliath. The top and bottom scenes are of Paulus. Our photos could not do justice to this amazing piece of work. It must be seen to be believed. It is possible that the theme of this tobacco box relates to HandelÂ's (b.1585-d 1659) Messiah. The form, in any event, is that of a 17 th Â- 18 th C. Dutch tobacco box. Dimensions: 6 1⁄4Â" X 2Â" X 1 1⁄4Â". In very good antique condition. Evidence of a faint spray of water staining and more wear than usual to the Elias scene. We feel it could be more recent (say 19 th C.) because of its remarkable condition as well as the intricacy of the designs. We will be offering several tobacciana read more
