Offered is a antique early 18th century physicians pewter syphilis shrine used to administer Mercury to sufferers of syphilis common in Europe from the 15th century. The treatment was almost as bad as the disease with side effects from the Mercury causing tooth loss, ulcer,neurological damage. The disease was incurable until 1928 with the development of penicillin. The syringe unscrews to remove head with plunger wrapped in old hair to create good suction. Syringe has a wonderful original aged finish and patina. Showing lots of history. Instrument is in excellent condition. No cracks or damage. A nice early example. 4 1/4" long.
