Antique Early 19th C Wood & Iron Game Utensil Rack AAFA Description: A Great Early 19th Century Folk Art Carved Wooden Game Rack with Iron Hooks Splendid piece of Americana from the Pennsylvania region dating circa 1820-40. A piece such as this was known as a "game rack" as game hung from the pointed iron hooks. Be it small game having been trapped or hunted, or perhaps fowl from the farm or marketplace. No matter what was for the pot it would have been hung on one of these wrought iron hooks before it was dressed by a period cook. Today game racks make perfect ways in which to hold and display period hearth articles, especially those with hanging loops including tasting spoons and other blacksmith made utensils. The piece would also serve to compliment any other pieces in a country home, from dried herbs to molded candle pairs etc. All carved out of a single wooden board, this piece measures an impressive 30" in length. I can't be exactly sure of the wood grain, thought it appears to be grained like pine, it's certainly a heavier example, perhaps maple [?].
