~***~ HOME QUEEN Cook Book ~***~*~* 1893 * 1900 * 1901 *~* Too Too Wonderful HOME QUEEN Cook Book is a much loved Favorite of mine...I found it packed away this week no less in a box of family pictures ...who knows what I was thinking t ....I thought it time to let it go so it can be displayed and thoroughly enjoyed by someone else for many years to come.... This wonderful Cook Book is an amazing 608 pages long and is full to the brim with Recipes and Housekeeping Knowledge that is truly amazing for it's age..... Originally published in 1893 ...by Fort Dearborn Publishing Co. ..then in 1900 by H. Chandler....and this edition in 1901 by M.A. Donohoe & Co. .... The opening of the Cook Book has an INTRODUCTORY ....Which begins by saying.....T are many cook books upon the marked most of them good in their way but necessarily sectional in their composition and make up. It is a well-known fact that New England cookery differs from that of the Southern and Western states. A cook book issuing from either of these localities must, without fail bear the stamp of the section from which it sprung. Then too the resources at the command of any one individual must of necessity be circumscribed. In the Preparation of the recipe department of the HOME QUEEN the plan has been to secure a few choice and will-tried recipes from each of hundreds of individuals scattered thoughout every state and Territory in the Union thus giving all the benefit of the prevailing styles of cooking in every section of the country and at the same time preventing the sameness and restricted nature of a department if prepared by any one individual. .......and it continues on .... Following the Intoductory is a section Titles MISS JULIET CORSON AND American Cooking Schools ....Then the TABLE OF CONTENTS which is extremely extensive ....starting with Food and Helath .....The morning Meal .....Party Suppers....How to Carve...butter and Cheese....waffles and Griddle cakes.... and jumbles ....preserves ...ice cream.....folding table napkins....The toilet ...plus much much more ..... When flipping through this cook book ....many of the recipes have signatures below them ...from the person that had t recipe chosen for this cook book ...Each of the sections ...are simply yet beautifully done ....and the front page of the Cook Book is inscribed in pencil...Mrs. Susan Hylton..... In the back of the book in the Miscellaneous section t are several pages of heplful household hints ...such as : TO REMOVE BERRY STAINS ... hold over burning sulphur....yah I thought that one would be quite helpful today ha ha ha ...TO KEEP FLIES OFF GILT FRAMES ... boil three or four onions in a pint of water and apply with a soft brush....are we sure it was the applying or did the house smell so bad by this time nothing wanted to come in ......ha ha ha....AND is one we should all try today....!!! TO KEEP OFF MOSQUITOS ... rub exposed parts with kerosene. The odor is not noticed after a few minutes and children especially are much relieved by its use ...O.K. now this one is just plain crazy ...if my dad would have put kerosene on us we would have been latd in it ...and one flick of a match to light a cigarette and up in flames we would have been.....WOW .....SOoooooo as you can see t is ALOT of interesting reading .....I can say though the recipes look mighty good at least the ones were I am always drawn to CAKES and PIES .....well my secret is out ...I do love my sweets.!!! This Cook Book is A wonderful piece history ...It is still quite readable and can be read with care....It is worn .....The hard cover has seperated from the book and is loose...as well the binding is loose on the front w the hard cover has detatched but is still intact at the back...the pages are yellowed and chipped ...which is natural over the course of time......Overall ...it is still a wonderful cook book ...and displays beautifully in an old country Kitchen ...I always kept the book front bound to the book with ... read more
