So the big question, is it ebony or is it lignum vitae? When I acquired it I was told that it is ebony but I have not handled enough ebony to be able to identify it very well versus something else. I know a lot of old shipwright's planes were made of lignum vitae and the grain pattern looks similar so I think there is a chance that this plane is made of lignum vitae and has just darkened with age. The tote (handle) is a separate piece that was glued into the body and to me it looks a lot like beech that has been stained or somehow darkened. The wedge I am pretty sure is boxwood.Plane is 15" long, 2.25" wide with a 1.75" wide iron. The iron is a Stanley so it must not be original but the chipbreaker looks like it certainly could be. It is not a Stanley chipbreaker.I can't find a maker's mark anywhere on the plane.
