Estate Elephant Ivory Carved Incense BurnerYou are bidding on a very old piece of carved elephant tusk ivory. It looks to have advanced stages of yellowing. I cannot be certain how old this piece is, but just based on its coloration it is by far the oldest ivory I have seen. It most likely is an incense burner but could also be used as a snuff bottle. At some point in its life t was a finial that was attached to the lid. It was mounted via threading so t is no actual break. Could have been damaged and the person who owned it might have just removed it instead of having a damaged piece. It is mounted on a rich dark wood that is typical of highly decorated pieces of elephant tusk ivory. The stand measures 5 1/2 inches by 4 inches.The incense burner itself measures 4 1/4 inches wide at the handles and 3 1/4 inches tall.Figurine appears to have the Lines of Retzius which are unique to elephant ivory. These fine intersecting lines are visible in cross section, and give an engine-turned effect (intersecting lines with a diamond shape between them). We purchased this item from a private collection and the item was made prior to 1970. This was from the estate of Pauline Palumbo an heir to one of the founders of standard oil.Condition...........Looks to be in very good condition. T is one very tiny chip on the rim of the lid w it touches the base but it is very small. Please refer to the pictures provided for additional information. Shipping and Handling: $9.50.
