It has a lovely patina only light oxidation (rust) on the pointed, steel awl. It is Guaranteed authentic and original.It has a carved, ox-bone handle that is about 1.8" (46 mm) long that is held in place on the steel awl with a small brass, ferrule. The bone handle is carved in the shape of a fleur-de-lis , (in French, fleur means "flower", and lis means "lily") or iris that was used as a decorative design or symbol, especially by the French. This French design suggests that it was made by a French sailor or perhaps just for a French buyer.
