This is for an impressive Georgian, early 19th century, English, brass traveling compass set in a mahogany case. The case is 4" (10.3cm) x 3.75" (9.5cm) x 1.375" (3.5cm) with the dial measuring 3.5" (8.8cm) in diameter. The removable cover slides thru grooves on both sides of the case to cover and protect the compass. The outer stepped edge of this attractive compass dial is engraved in 1 degree increments. The inner dial is engraved from 0-360 degrees and is divided into 5 degree intervals. There is an excellent original finish to the dial. There is one small barely visible shrinkage crack in the case. The brass has developed a nice even patina. It is in very good condition and functions properly. It is not marked. It is rare to find compasses of this age in such good condition.
