Christmas! Everything we think of as 'being Christmas' started with these mouth blown, silvered, coloured balls with brass caps called Kugels. The first kugels were made in Lauscha Germany as early as 1820, distinguished by their size and a cork from which to hang them. The brass caps, such as are on the three I have listed, were introduced around 1850. Originallyimported to the United States in the 1860's, F.W. Woolworth was the man who brought the kugel mainstream appeal in the 1880's sellingthem for pennies a piece; his initial investment of $25 morphed into sales of at least $25 million dollars of the next decade. I think he'd be shocked to see what his ornaments are selling for today. So, about the kugels I am offering. All three are 2" - two gold, one silver. Sold separately. No chips or cracks in the glass, some loss (around the caps inside) of silver to be expected given that they are over 100 years old. Unpolished brass caps have lovely patina and are completely intact (rings, caps and very old hangers). Why I am selling - the truth is that I was at an estate sale and t were four, these are duplicates of ones I already have but the red one was not. I just want to break even and cover the cost of the red one and a Victorian wire ornament I got at the same sale. Thanks for looking, and bidding. Will combine shipping, bubble read more
