From my Medical Collection: Here we have a RARE Antique German Silver & Ebony LAUNDY (Crown Logo) Surgeon's Amputation Capital Set Bone Saw, 1802-1819. Joseph Laundy surgical instruments are very hard to find !! Laundy was a well know instrument maker in London, England from 1802 - 1819 and was considered the primary instrument maker for St. Thomas's and Guy's Hospitals in London. The spline is stamped LAUNDY and has his very nicely engraved crown logo .This Steel AMPUTATION Saw is called a 'Capital saw' and was manufactured in the "pre-sterilization era" when medical instruments still had handles made of ebony, rosewood or bone. This was a 'pistol-handled saw when it was whole. Unfortunately it was broken many year ago. You can still see the nice shape and the remaining cross-hatched surface. This was a high end saw in that Spline appears to be made of German silver or nickel. All of the metal parts of the saw are in very good condition with some areas on the blade showing light discoloration from corrosion.Other than hospitals these saws were usually found included in 'Capital' Surgical Sets, which had a large compliment of instruments and used in the very rear area of a battle region or in a hospital (large fine mahogany crafted cases with specific spaces for each instrument).
