A glass paperweight, 3 1/4 inches in diameter, and 1 inch in height The base has a carved design of a woman with an eagle on her head, her costume appears to be modeled after ancient military dress; the top and bottom have inset "thumbprints" around the edges I attempted to research this paperweight, and was advised that it appears to be a souvenir from the 1893 Columbian Exposition This paperweight has had a very hard life since its' manufacture, the top has numerous scratches and one chip, the base has a few light scratches; I found this in a thrift store in Virginia Thanks for your interest First two photos are of the top, the last two of the base A kind eBay member from the Paperweights group has pointed me to a Web page from the Chicago Public Library. The design in this pw is based on the "I Will" figure designed in 1891 by Chicago Artist Charles Holloway; his design won a contest sponsored by the local Inter-Ocean newspaper -- it celebrates the strength and vitality of the city of Chicago following the disastrous fire of 1871. The bird on the brow of the figure is a phoenix, representing rebirth.
