A wonderful antique Italian, natural shell cameo; beautifully hand carved in unusually high relief to reveal multiple tones, and depicting a classical bacchante with grapes and vines in her hair. She's set into a solid 9 carat gold mount with twist cable bezel, for wear as a brooch, with a gold safety chain. This type of jewellery was brought back from their Grand Tours by the gentry of Europe in the Georgian and Victorian periods. It dates from around 1860/70, is stamped '9ct' for solid 9 carat gold to the back and isinexcellent, fully wearablecondition throughout, with no loss or damage. It weighs 16.3 grams and measures 2 x 1 ½ inches.
