Here we have an Antique JAMES SWAN, Heavy Duty Timber Framing, Shipbuilding, Socket Chisel Slick , 3" Wide. The James Swan Tool Co., Seymour, Connecticut (1877-1951) manufactured Augers, Awls, Bits, Boring Machines, Chisels, Draw Knives, Screwdrivers, etc. Swan, who was born in Dumfries, Scotland, December 18, 1833, immigrated from Scotland in 1854 and worked at the Bassett Iron Works in Birmingham, CT, the Farrel Foundry & Machine Co in Ansonia, CT, and for Oliver Annes before buying Annes's business in 1877. The Swan company, along with the Stanley Rule & Level Co., are considered to be the last manufacturers of fine edge tools working at the end of the classic period of American tool making.The upper blade body is weakly stamped: The James Sw____ EXTRA CAST-STEEL and has the waves that the 'swan logo' sits on. The 3" wide edge is sharp but should be tuned up by the new owner before use. The chisel socket and body are in really great shape, considering the age of the tool. The chisel measures 13-1/8".
