An Antique Japanese, 19th Century, Edo Period, Tsuri-doro Hanging Lantern in Pierced Gilt Brass This is a delightful Japanese Tsuri-Toro Hanging Lantern made from Gilt Brass or Bronze, in thin sheet form. with decorative casting/ handwork. This dates to the Edo period. Hanging Lanterns or Tsuri-Doro were originally used almost exclusively in temples and shrines. They had an enclosed light chamber set into a roofed structure with open grillwork to which rice paper may have been applied for a more subdued effect. Lanterns such as these were brought back by British explorers and tradesmen from Japan in the 1880s. Larger examples similar to the ones offered here were brought back and suspended from the ceiling of the Japanese Drawing Room in the Royal Bath hotel in Bournemouth. These are now to be found in the Russell-Cotes Museum's Japanese Collection. The lantern measures approx 20 cm. in height and the shade measures approx 24 cm by 24 cm. It is in good condition with with some wear to the gilding and some dirt etc from age.
