Offered are five Japanese hina dolls which create a wonderful display. These are the musicians from a 15 doll Girl's Day Set. They are petite and very well crafted by the dollmaker. Of course, they have the traditional whittled stick extending from the neck which is inserted into the rice straw bundled body. They have a shiny gofun coat on both head and hands. Hair is intricately designed and different on each doll - all intact with no pieces missing. Hands are intricately carved from wood. No hairline cracks in the gofun on the heads noted at all. Hands are intact with no chipped off fingers. Fabric appears to be silk and is very detailed in design. No holes or tears noted. Three still have their little cellulose crafted hats, all five have their hand whittled and painted wood swords, three have their cellulose drums. Each has a black lacquered wood platform.This is a quality group of hina dolls estimated from circa 1920-35 based on face design, kimono quality and design and very shiny gofun coating. The detail is outstanding as each face looks like a different person and with a different expression. The shinier the gofun coating the more the oyster shell had to be hand ground for the paste, sometimes for days.
