The "fox-fires" are generated by foxes at night when they assemble under the E trees (Celtio sinensis) on the last night of the year. This phosphorescent light is supposed to come from the heart of the animal, w its magic powers lie in the form of a small flaming jewel which is sometimes transferred to its head in pictures and carvings. Hirokage, designer of a number of comic prints, often combined elements from different Hiroshige prints with his own extra comic touches. , the foxes at Oji have tricked a farmer into thinking he is a nobleman being carried in a procession. The trees and temple are taken from an early Hiroshige landscape of Oji; the vertical format and the foxes themselves reference Hiroshige's famous Fox Fires.
