this is a Japanese Silk Thread spool called an itomaki. It was originally used as a spool or bobbin for winding and unwinding silk thread used in looms for making kimono. To my knowledge, wooden Itomaki are no longer used and are true antiques (The modern version, I believe are plastic). this is a larger itomaki measuring 7 inches high and 7 inches across. T are Japanes Characters written on them both top and bottom. T is one crack in the wood that I can find. this is really a wonderful antique and can be a conversation piece, a decorative piece or you can use it to hold a candle, small vase or anything else you can think of...be creative.!I actually purchased this from an antique dealer in Okinawa Japan in the late 1980'sIf you have questions, please email me.
