My mother bought thisregimental pewter-lidded beer stein in 1969. The stein apparently belonged to Reservist Weigel, who was part of the 17 th Infantry regiment, 2 nd Company in Germersheim. On the left and right of the handle is a list of the names of the other members of the regiment. The names are listed by rank: Underofficer, Private 1 st Class, Musician horn, Musician Tamborine, Foot soldier-Infantry’ To the right of the names is a scene of a soldier standing guard, other soldiers marching and a soldier in the fore-ground with his left hand holding his helmet aloft. Above this scene are the words: ‘We stood on the edge of the Rhine to protect the King and the Fatherland’. Below that: ‘Halt! Who goes there? Patrol! Patrol advance, nothing new at this Post’. In the center of the stein is a large shield with four decorative panels, two featuring a lion wearing a crown. In the center is a smaller panel with blue and white diamonds. Above the shield is a gold crown, and above that the words: ‘You were my comfort in gloomy hours. That’s what I felt as a soldier’. Below that: ‘Ever Faithful’. To the right of the center image is a scene of a soldier standing guard, with soldiers in the background sitting around a campfire. The words above this, roughly translated, are: ‘Let us here relax and rest – The guard shall do his duty’. read more
