This auction is for an Artificial Horizon that dates from the last quarter of the 19th Century. The horizon was made by Keuffel & Esser Co. of New York, makers of all types of instruments and telescopes used by the U.S. military, Geodetic Survey, and other users. I'm not an expert, but I'll do my best to describe this item. It's important that you're pleased with your purchase, so please view all pictures before bidding. If you have specific questions, I will do my best to give additional information. As I understand it, reflective artificial horizons date back to the 1700's and are still used today as training aids, mostly for dry land navigation. This device comes in a dove tailed wooden box. There are 3 items in the box, a steel tub that was used to hold mercury as a reflecting surface, a triangular metal and glass faced hood to minimize wind, and a metal base plate. The triangular hood is marked "Keuffel & Esser Co, New York". The wood box measures approximately 6" x 8 1/4", and 6 1/2" tall. Condition: As seen in photos, the mercury holder has some rust on the top surface. The triangular hood is in good condition with no damage to the glass. The wooden box shows age with an old patina, plenty of surface distress, and broken leather straps. The latches and hinges work fine. Note: The item is heavy, so I will ship Parcel Select read more
