Victorian large Shell Cameo brooch/pendant with a high quality carved image of Bacchus's (God of Wine) priestess, Bacchante wearing wreath of vine leaves and berries and a necklace of grapes, some superb detail there! Set in Silver marked 1897, Birmingham, the frame is decorated with a nice bright-cut engraving. I think it was silver gilt originally as there is a hint of golden tone. Hallmarked as shown. Cameo itself measures h4.5 x w3.6cm between edges of the frame, the whole piece is approx 5.5cm high x 4.7cm wide. The pin is in place but the hook needs tightening or changing, there is also a small loop on top with a detachable light-weight chain (which looks like 9ct gold but not marked) so can be used as pendant if the pin is taken off.
