The Aero: (Incorporating "Flying" [Established 1902] and "The Airship") 1910. Volume III. 26 issues, nos. 59-84. Q uarter bound in leather, with moire silk boards. This is the first British aviation magazine to concentrate on the newly invented airplane. The weekly issues, under the title The Aero, had only began appearing, the year prior, in 1909. The Aero abounds with articles on leading aviators, aeronautical innovations, and new exhibitions, prizes and races of the period. There are also many pages of technical writing, with detailed construction plans for new wing designs, propellers, landing gear, struts, and so forth, all of which are accompanied by in-depth drawings and photographs. Illustrated advertisements on dirigibles and a variety of airplanes and their parts appear throughout. In many ways 1910 was a banner year for aviation. The first flight in Australia was recorded, speeds of over 100 m.p.h. were achieved, and a flight above 2500 meters broke all previous records. The first team of British flyers crossed the English Channel, and the first female British pilot made her solo flight (albeit in a glider).
