This is a Antique Leeds & Northrup Co., Philadelphia, Reflecting Galvanometer.Leeds & Northrup Co., Philadelphia, reflecting galvanometer, has extreme sensitivity to current flow which moves the reflecting mirror a fixed distance per microampere. The first galvanometer was built in Germany by Johann S. Schweigger in 1820. It is a device used to measure low-level electric currents by electromechanical action. A mirror galvanometer is a mechanical meter that senses electric current, except that instead of moving a needle, it moves a mirror. In the D'Arsonval design the coil has many turns of fine wire, and is suspended by a flat ribbon of wire which serves as one lead-in wire.Leeds & Northrup made a series of instruments with different coil resistances and configurations. The long, narrow coil was used for current measurements, and the sensitivity ranged from 0.014 to 0.0002 microampere. This design is for wall-mounting and could be used as part of a suggested laboratory lamp and scale device.Has Serial # 1615192 Made in Philadelphia, PA Item measures 13 3/4" length x 9" wide x 2 3/8" high and weighs 6.6 poundsCondition: Vintage collector's item...
