From my Medical Collection : Here we have an Antique LENTZ & SONS, PHILA. Surgeon's Bone Amputation Saw with Ebony Handle . Metal tip of the handle is stamped: LENTZ & SONS. Charles Lentz was a surgical instrument maker in Philadelphia, PA from 1863 - 1900. He was operating during the American Civil War but I don't see him listed as a supplier for the Union Army. This was still in the "pre-sterilization era" when medical instruments still had handles made of ebony, rosewood, bone, or gutta-percha (a hard rubber). The cross-hatched Ebony handle is in very good condition with the exception of some 'knuckle-head' drilling a 'hang-hole into it. (why do people do this !!). There are no cracks or breaks in the handle. The nickle plating is still in very good condition with minor wear here and there (see pics). The blade has very good teeth. As you can see the blade can be removed from the handle to facilitate cleaning and surface sanitization. Saw is approx. 12-1/2" long. This is a good saw to add to a collection of 'Philadelphia Makers'.** Please remember to leave Feedback . I will gladly reciprocate. :-)
