Up for auction are 2 important and rare antique maps of Colonial America by Pieter Van Der Aa:
Title No. 1 (pictures 1-6, 12): 'T Noorder Gedeelte van Virginie, door Bartholomeus Gosnol en MartinPringe uyt Engeland bevaaren Creator: Pieter Van der Aa Subject: Atlantic Year: 1714 Size: 12" x 8" (includes margins) Frame Size: 17 3/4" x 13" Color: Black & White Condition: Very Good Language:Dutch; statement of scale in Latin This interesting map of the North Atlantic shows parts of the European, African and American continents with Iceland and Greenland at top . Depicts the first permanent colonization of America by the English. From the report of Martin Pring's journey from England to New England in 1603, the sea routes of Captain Pring from the British Isles through the Azores to Plymouth are depicted. Virginia extends into what is present-day Massachusetts as well as the Chesapeake Bay area. The large title cartouche is surrounded by a fabulous scene of the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth rock and being welcomed by Native Americans. Details include Roanoak Inlet, Jamestown, Chespeake Bay, Boston, and Martha's Vineyard. Vander Aa was one of the great compilers of early voyages. Many of these voyages did not include contemporary maps, making Vander Aa's accounts, the only obtainable graphical representations of the voyage. and Title No. 2 (pictures 1, 7-12): d'Engelze Volkplanting in Virginie door Iohan Smith Bezogt en Verder UytgesetCreator: Pieter van der Aa Subject: Colonial Mid-Atlantic Year: Dated 1714 Map Size: 12" x 9" Frame Size: 17 3/4" x 13" Color: Black & White Condition: Very Good Language: Dutch; statement of scale in Latin Highly important and rare Vander Aa's derivation of the famous John Smith Virginia. This version is very rare. A well-engraved map of the Mid-Atlantic extending from Long Island to Cape Henry, with Breakelen (Brooklyn) named on Long Island. The map was derived from Capt. John Smith's map of 1612, the first to depict Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries with any accuracy. It is filled with primarily native names, but with a few Dutch and English ones scattered around. The decorative cartouche shows Smith being brought before Powhatan for judgment, showing English ships off the coast. Relief shown pictorially. "Met privilegie." Lower right corner has cartouche illustration of John Smith's arrival in the New World. Up for auction are 2 amazing genuine important and rare antique maps by Pieter Van Der Aa . The maps have been together a very long time and I did not wish to part them so they will sell together. The maps are currently stuck together in lower/ upper margins but they seem to be loosely attached. Perhaps this is the way they came originally prior to cut...
