The scene is of seven university students drinking and toasting and one guy has a large pipe and there is well behaved sitting dog and a waitress with 4 large steins. What is especially impressive is the silver plated brass lid. I saw a stein in a beerstein auction catalogue with a similar lid and it was described as a WMF presentation lid. A check with indicated that WMF stands for Wuerttembergische MetalwarrenFabrik. A metal working shop that started with two guys and threw mergers grew to over 6000 employees by 1905. It appears that they bought steins from Mettlach and then applied their lids. The firm also worked with the printing industry and appliance manufacturing among other things. Mettlach has at least one stein (1512) where a WMF lid was their supplied lid with the stein. Without particularly trying I have several collected several steins with the WMF lid, some are silver plated and at lease one appears to be brass. When they have not been polished or cleaned for 100 years they are not impressive but are like a diamond in the rough. I have included pictures of my other steins and how this one looked when I got it along with others in an auction lot. Although I am quite certain that these steins with the metal lids would cost somewhat more than the stock ceramic inlay lids most collectors are not willing to pay more for read more
