Antique Mid 1800s Money Box Hughs NE Key $100 Bank Nte WOW - my husband and I had to drive way up north in Illinois - almost to Wisconsin - recently to pick something up, so we took the opportunity to shop along the way. I have SO MANY cool things for you this week. Especially some fabulous and very old farm primitives, some of them barn fresh. I’m also still listing some items from the Hinckley estate sale. Be sure to check out my other listings! So, I'm going through my treasure trove of purchases, pulling from the top of the pile, and each item is just as exciting as the last - this one is soooo cool! What I have is an antique, 1800's strong box that measures 10 3/4" wide, 5 1/4" deep and 2 3/4" high. Treasure number one is that is still has its original key and lock, treasure number two is that it has the name of the former owner, E.R. Hughes painted on the side, and Mega treasure number three is that is has an original 1877 bank note from the First National Bank in North Bend Nebraska, made out to Henry Hughs, in the amount of $100.00 - how cool is that! The box I'm assuming, was filled with papers and at some point in time probably exposed to heat. The note is affixed to the bottom of the box in two halves. Also, you can see that there's an old stamp stuck, as well as another document on the back wall, and remnants of others on the inside lid. How cool is that - talk about provenance! The box is in excellent solid and study condition. It still has much of its original black, gold and red finish, with wear spots and scrapes all over. The key fits in the lock, but I'm not sure if it works - I wasn't able to lock it. I tend not to try to force anything because I don't want to break it, so I bet you can get it to work. There are also minor small dings all over, and some larger shallow ones on the bottom. This one has a story to tell. If I had the time, I'd jump on ancestry to find out about this person but, to many treasures, to little time - I'll leave that to you! If boxes could talk! Payment is due within 7 business days after close of auction, after that, the sale will be void, and I will relist the item. I have had some trouble with the Ebay shipping calculator giving people bombastic shipping rates (especially after purchase with the Ebay “Pay Now“ invoice on Parcel Post rates). I charge shipping cost, so if you think it’s too high, email me so that I can check it out, before you pay me. That being said, we pack very well, so that will add to the weight. I ship within two business days of receipt of your payment, or I will notify you otherwise. With postage rates going up and up, I am shipping more items Parcel Post. Please realize that this can mean a 2-3 week delivery, sometimes longer. As a matter of fact, this year, I’m finding the “longer” more the norm. Parcel Post travels by land or rail and, at least in this area, packages do not leave the regional post office until they fill up a bin going in the same direction (so there’s no estimated exact number of days like you have with Priority Mail - the Post Office says 5-7 days, but that‘s not what I’m finding).
