This miniature hand painted portrait on Ivory is of the Marquise de Pompadour, aka. Madame Pompadour. Her real name was Jeanne Antoinette Poisson (1721-1764) and she was the Official Chief Mistress of King Louis XV of France.French, ca. 1850-1900.When Poisson became the King's mistress she required a title in order to be presented at court. The King purchased the Pompadour Estate with the title and gave the estate, along with the title to Jeanne Antoinette making her the Marquise de Pompadour. No visible signature, but I have not examined Ivory wafer out of its frame. In the portrait Mme. is dressed in an elaborate ermine cape and powdered hair, so typical of 18th Century style. Her hair trails around her shoulders and is entwined with strings of pearls. Her hair (or wig) is topped with ribbons and plumes and strings of pearls. Pearl earring visible in (L) ear.She has a lovely, serene look on her face as she gazes to the left (her right). The artist was probably a student earning funds by copying in miniature, portraits by the masters and selling them to tourists. He was very skillful in capturing the lady's incredible beauty and exhibits great skill and a steady hand in this exquisite miniature. The frame is an elegant gilt brass ormolu with a baroque plumed border. At the back there is a hinged brass support stand for upright surface read more
