Thislovely antique souvenir, from Niagara Falls, has 29 opalescent “ moonstone ”* beads strung on gold-filled wire, along with a delightful Stanhope that holds tiny views from the Falls-- “American Falls”, “ Horse Shoe Falls”, “The Falls from Canada”, “Bobby Leach”, “ Whirlpool Rapids”, and “Prospect Point”. It dates from early 1900s, and it was made with materials that were mined near the Falls. The Stanhope is made with Satinspar, a type of feldspar, and the moonstone beads are composed of two feldspar species—orthoclase and albite; it was rumored that the spars were “petrified Niagara mist”. The necklace measures 15-3/4 long, unclasped, it has a springring clasp, and the Stanhope measures 9/16 inch long by 7/16 inch in diameter. Except for a bit of tarnish and some surface imperfections that were probably created during the bead manufacturing process, this “Antique Moonstone Necklace w/ Niagara Falls Pictures in Stanhope Souvenir” is in very good condition. It will certainly delight collectors! *Please note that the moonstone beads have not been tested, and though I was told that they are stone beads, they may be antique glass beads.
