This is a lovely antique oil painting on canvas depicting a shepherd driving his sheep along an English village road past a traditional thatched cottage. It is signed to the lower right corner "J M Burfield 79". I believe that the artist's full name was James Moulton Burfield R.A. R.B.S. and that the "79" refers to the year 1879. Unfortunately, there is some damage to report, but nothing which should be outside the capabilities of a competent restorer. As shown, there are 4 tears. The largest (approx 1.5" (4cm) is in the sky to the left of, and slightly above the chimney pot. The second is approx 0.75" (2cm) and can be found above the signature and to the right of the girl holding the baby. The final two are each around 0.125" (0.5cm) and are to the right of the shepherd's elbow. The frame is not original, but is in good condition. The frame measures approx 14.375" (36.5cm) x 12.375" (31.5cm), while the painting is 11.625" (29.5cm) x 9.625" (24.5cm).
