Original Antique Circa 1875 French Oil Painting “Une Jeune Fille Seule,” (A Lonely Young maiden,”) Circa 1860-1875. A charmingly naïve 19 th Century Academic Oil Painting, oil on artist board. Offered today is a small gem of the French art world. In the early to mid 1800’s, the French continued their pre-eminence within the world of art. Impressionism had not arrived on the scene, but Romanticism still held its sway. Genre painting, landscapes, portraits and still lifes were popular and fashionable. The painting seen here represents a somewhat naïve take on the Romantic ideal. The young woman, seated on a block of stone, in the midst of a dreamy landscape of romantic ruins, does not seem particularly sad, but rather wistful. Behind her in the distance we can see the spires of what may be a cathedral or a castle. The small cloth-wrapped bundle and the walking stick beside her tell us that she may be “running away.” From an unhappy family or a too-strict employer, we will never be sure. She is not at all dressed in the clothes of poverty. Rather she seems quite well-kept and proper. At this point, she seems lost in thought, dreamy thought at that.
