Antique Large Padlock WW & Co. Wilcox Heart Shape Working with Key & Short Chain Attached Estate item, exact age unknown, mark indicates 1845-1875 Made by William Wilcox & Co. of Middletown, CT (Stamped into the drop) Just over 4 1/2" long, including bottom ring, 2 1/2" across widest area Black painted metal 7 1/2" chain Lock works Complete with key This auction is for one antique lock made by William Wilcox & Co. The stamped mark would indicate a manufacturing date of 1845-1875, but I am not an expert in this area, so cannot absolutely verify that. The company name changed to William Wilcox Manufacturing Company from 1875-1910. The item is from an estate and has been used. I am not sure of the exact use of the chain. The lock has a thick ring attached to the base, and there is a length of chain attached. The lock is all metal, and is weighty, about 10 ounces including chain. Part or all of it may be iron. The lock is painted black. The paint is original and worn off in many places. The lock has a drop, a swiveling metal piece which would cover the keyhole when not in use. This drop is secured off to the side at present, still connected, but bent over the lock's edge, possibly intentionally. The skeleton style key is included and it operates the lock, turned clockwise it releases the hasp, rotated counter-clockwise it secures
