NR- This is a N o R eserve Auction -NR This mold is marked "195" It is 4-3/8" on the longest measure. It is in good condition. It is one of several that I am listing this week. It came from the estate of Reid McLain. The sales brochure pictured below dates from the mid 1960's. It shows some of frozen treats that Reid Mclain's Snow Bird's business offered. They were all made from the over 3500 antique molds in his collection. His collection later grew to over 5000 molds. The winner of this auction will receive a color copy of this brochure as will as a copy of a 1982 magazine article giving the history of the Reid Mclain mold collection. Reid McLain returned from WWII as a Lt. Col. in the US Army Air Corps. He opened the Snow Bird Drive-In and sold soft serve cones and other items. He began collecting antique molds as a hobby and in a small way was using them in his business. In 1954 the street in front of his business was turned into a one-way street and his retail business was cut in half. It was then that he really got into the mold business seriously. His collection eventually numbered around 5000, and most were antiques. McLain filled the molds with his own frozen custard and sometimes added color tints to create just the right look. His frozen treats became a claim of fame of sorts for him. They were served at a fortnight read more
