This tied quilt is from the 1880s and has some fabrics from the 1860s and 1870s. There is a nice assortment of indigos, red prints and even a few novelty prints. There are twelve 14" hand pieced 8 pointed stars surrounded with a circle of pieced triangles. The construction of the top is unusual in that the circles have been reverse appliqued onto the white background, rather that appliqued on top of the background fabric. the quilt measures out at 61"x71". The backing is a white and black check. There are age stains along a section of the back. It looks like this is where it was folded and been exposed-such as on a quilt rack on in a chest. The pyramid pieced border is very well done and measures 3" wide. There are actually three borders framing the main top design. It is hand tied with white wool yarn in the invisible technique, most often used with fancier crazy quilts. No ties are visible on the back.Need to add that the stitching around the circles for the reverse applique consists of two rows of treadle machine stitching. It is done very, very well and circles lie smooth, with no puckers or crookedness of stitching. I apologize for forgetting to put that detail into the original information.
