An antique naive Adam & Eve sampler embroidered by Ellen Jeffery - "wrought by her in the 17 year of her age". Ellen has misspelled sampler, embroidering the word "sampel". A small section, most likely with the year of creation, appears to have been removed (see photo) indicating that this is probably a vanity sampler. The owner would have destroyed the date to prevent a prospective suitor or employer from knowing her age. It has angels, over-sized urns of tulips typical of the 1830 to 1840 period and also a religious verse. The sampler is in fairly good condition with a little wear, two places where the linen has thinned and discolouration around the verse (see photos). It measures about 16 inches (41 cm.) square.
