You are viewing an antique primitive stoneware chicken waterer. The waterer is 7-1/2" tall and the base is 6" in diameter. T are only a couple of tiny specks of glaze missing and the only chipped area is inside w the hole was drilled and right next to that hole is a spot w the glaze is off and the pottery is distorted - like maybe it was a pop in the glaze (see photo). T's also another 1/4" circle of glaze missing up in the inside of the waterer. Also included in this listing a nice 9" in diameter stoneware plate to sit the waterer on. This plate may have been a pie plate, but it works perfectly with the waterer. Both the waterer and the plate are the glossy brown/black alkaline glaze. No chips or cracks on the pie plate. You turn the waterer upside down and fill it with water. Then place the plate on top and while holding the two pieces together, carefully turn it rightside up. The water comes out of the hole and fills the plate but doesn't go any deeper than to the top of the hole (about 3/4"). Then it refills itself as the water is drunk buy the chickens or birds. The pie plate also holds the rainwater if the watered itself is empty. Great in the yard for birds, chipmunks, squirrels and other critters. These chicken waterers were also referred to as "peepy feeders". Thanks for looking and please check out my other listings.
