This primitive cast iron hanging griddle was made in the mid to late 1800s and came with us from the Scottish Highlands. Used in Scottish Croft Houses at a time when all cooking was done over an open hearth, the griddle would hang over the fire suspended from an iron crane in the chimney and to raise or lower the cooking heat you move the adjustable crane. Pancakes, bannocks and scones would quickly cook to perfection and the cast iron griddles were so popular they continued to be used on cast iron cook stoves and modern ranges, many Scottish housewives will use nothing else to this day. This large griddle with its rare oval shape is in wonderful authentic antique condition with no damage and just surface rusting as you would want and expect (more on the base as the photos show), this is ready to hang by your rustic fireside or kitchen. T is no reason why you couldn't scrub this up and give it a coat of vegetable oil and use it again! The griddle has a fold down handle for easy storage with a locking ring to keep it in the upright position, the base has an iron foundry mark. It is a fantastic big size, measuring 15.5" long, 9" wide, the base and handle are a very solid 1/4" thick and it weighs a whopping 10lbs. which is reflected in the postage.
