A series of 12 atmospheric tinted chromo-lithograph engravings based on the drawings of DAVID ROBERTS (1796-1864), the one time set designer at the Coburg Theatre in London (now known as The Old Vic) and The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, who was persuaded by J.M.W. Turner to abandon painting scenery and devote himself to art. Roberts travelled through Egypt, the Sinai Desert, Jordan, Lebanon and the Holy Land between 1838 and 1840, recording all he saw in drawings and watercolours. These lovely tinted chromo-lithographs were executed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd to illustrate THE LIFE OF CHRIST by F.W. Farrar, Canon of Westminster, published by Cassell, Petter & Galpin (1874). We found them, loose and unmounted, when searching through the stock of an antiquarian print shop which has been in storage since a member of our family closed the shop 40 years ago. The prints shown are (1) CANA, GENERAL VIEW; (2) TIBERIAS, LOOKING TOWARDS HERMON; (3) THE SEA OF TIBERIAS, LOOKING TOWARDS BASHAN; (4) CARMEL; (5) ENTRANCE TO THE CITADEL OF JERUSALEM; (6) DESCENT UPON THE VALLEY OF JORDAN; (7) TYRE; (8) SIDON, LOOKING TOWARDS LEBANON; (9) SEBASTE, ANCIENT SAMARIA; (10) St. DEAN D'ACRE FROM THE LAND; (11) FORTRESS OF AKABA, ARABIA PETRAEA and (12) ANCIENT WATCH-TOWER. A further ten engravings will be included within the package gratis. Some read more
