44 Genuine Mauritanian amber beads - of which nine have an unusual feature (see scans 3, 4 & 6) that I’ve never seen elsew: the area around the hole is decorated with copper (on a couple of the beads the metal has worn down). [please note in scan 5 not all the beads are shown] The strand measures between 18 - 19 inches long, the largest beads are well over 1 1/2 inches, 34mm. The weight is 131 grams. Mauritanians love beads and t is a unique “market” for beads they are part of a families wealth and are passed down from mother to daughter. I bought these beads about 30 years ago. In the late 1970s it was already hard to find genuine amber in Africa and nowadays it is almost impossible: what’s passed of for amber is mainly copal plastic. The largest bead measures 1 1/2 ” inch long by 1” inch wide. Real amber beads are getting harder to come by as the majority of real amber beads from Africa have been mostly collected leaving behind either copal or the plastic imitations flooding the market.
