Dante or Savanarola Chair. Antique. Renaissance. These 'scissor chairs' were collapsible. The seat was hinged to fold up. The back rest lifts off the groves in the arms; the legs were hinged at the X. In this one, the seat no longer folds up. There is an age crack in the seat itself, after which a repairman ran a bolt through the other side of the seat to make the seat permanent. The 'penwork' which I am calling the incised lines filled with ink, I think, to create the 3-dimensional drawings, on the back and seat = the harpies, the 3D pegs on the back; the fleur-di-lis on the seat, remind me at least of the art of the 1500s. The fact that the chair legs and the arm supports are all inlaid shows that this was not a cheap folding chair.LOCAL PICKUP ONLY FOR NOW - meaning you can make arrangements for packing and shipping.
